Best Red Wines at Tesco: Top 11 Picks for Winter 25/26

wine bottles on a purple background with the words best red wines at Tesco

Editor’s note: We’ve changed how we cover supermarket wines to make things easier for you. We’ve brought together the best bottles from every major UK supermarket into one easy-to-use seasonal guide, so you no longer have to search through hundreds of individual recommendation lists. Every major wine category is covered, ie white, rose, white, sparkling etc – with recommendations chosen for what you’ll actually want to drink at those times of year.

As the UK’s largest supermarket, Tesco’s wine range is vast, with inevitable highs and lows, but recent revamps have seen a welcome shift toward more variety, personality, and genuinely premium options.

Slake’s editor, Aleesha Hansel, braved the Tesco Autumn/Winter wine tasting – 152 bottles, one palate, and zero spittoon mishaps – to bring you the best of what’s on shelf this season.

Best Malbec at Tesco

Tesco Finest The Trilogy Malbec 2022 | £14

13.5% | 620g | Vegan

A plush, fruit-driven Malbec that’s sustainably certified. Brimming with black cherry and dark fruit, yet lifted by a thread of freshness that keeps things from being boring. It finishes with a lovely, soft mouthfeel.

Best Shiraz at Tesco

Tesco Finest Barossa Shiraz 2023 | £11

14.5% | 415g

Despite Shiraz being the only grape on the front label, this wine has a splash of Cabernet Sauvignon (2%) and other grapes (2%) which add a little something extra. Lots of black fruit and a touch of spice and black pepper – feels very Barossa.

Best Cabernet Sauvignon at Tesco

Tesco Finest Napa Valley Oakville Cabernet Sauvignon 2023 | £16

14.5% | 638g

Sweet, ripe fruit on the first sip, quickly tempered by layers gentle layers of oak, spice and smoke. There’s no hint of overextraction here. A sophisticated, well-judged wine that captures the character of the region beautifully.

Best Sangiovese at Tesco

Poggio Landi Brunello di Montalcino 2018 | £27

14% | 500g

A savoury finish with dried cherry, tobacco and fine tannins, lifted by a touch of freshness thanks to a slightly cooler vintage. It’s not cheap, but Brunello rarely is – long ageing and strict production rules mean you’re paying for craftsmanship and patience in every glass.

Best Carmenere at Tesco

Errazuriz Gran Reserva Carmenere 2023 | £11.50

13.5% | 390g | Vegan

Smooth, with dark plum and gentle smokiness, edged with subtle green notes. If you haven’t tried Carmenère before, give it a go – if you like Merlot, you’ll enjoy this; it’s just a touch more structured and savoury.

Best Rioja at Tesco

Marques de Riscal Rioja Reserva 2021 | £16

14.5% | 408g | Vegan

A textbook Rioja Reserva: ripe fruit, warming oak, and generous alcohol, all in perfect harmony. Think grown-up strawberries & cream, dusted with baking spices.

Best Spanish red wine at Tesco

Bodegas Care Garnacha Nativa 2022 | £12

14.5% | 420g | Vegan

An expressive Garnacha (yes, the Spanish spelling of Grenache) bursting with forest fruits and mocha. A playful, slightly different pick that’ll leave you smiling in the glass.

Best Portuguese red wine at Tesco

Grao Vasco Dao Vinho Tinto DOC 2023 | £8.50

13% | 420g | Vegan

The Dão region has higher-altitude vineyards and cooler nights than other Portuguese regions, like Alentejo, giving this wine a lighter, fresher body. Made from a blend of Alfrocheiro, Tinta Roriz, and Touriga Nacional, it’s bursting with red and black fruits, a hint of spice, and gentle, silky tannins

Best French wine red at Tesco

Famille Perrin L’Oustalet Ventoux 2024 | £9.50

13% | 399g

A solid example of one of the latest Rhône appellations to gain real traction in the UK. Sitting in the foothills of Mont Ventoux, the region’s higher altitude and cooler temperatures give its wines a lift and freshness that set them apart from the broader southern Rhône – think more brightness and spice, less baked richness.

Best Italian red wine at Tesco

Tesco Finest Sicilian Nero d’Avola 2024 | £8.50

13% | 500g | Vegan

As dark-fruited as its name suggests – Nero d’Avola literally means “black of Avola.” Full of southern Italian charm, it has just a whisper of residual sugar, giving the wine a plush, soft texture rather than overt sweetness

Best South African red wine at Tesco

Kanonkop Kadette Cape Blend 2023 | £13.50

14% | 620g | Vegan

This Cape Blend, with 38% Pinotage, adds a smoky, earthy twist to the classic Bordeaux grapes. Structured, balanced, and full of plum and spice, it’s a wine to remember – always a reliably solid choice.
